Juilliard Security Policies and Procedures

Dear Juilliard Community:

The Virginia Tech tragedy has raised questions about security policies and procedures on college campuses nationwide.  Juilliard has had a crisis management plan in place for several years.  I want to take this time to share some key components of that plan with you and to explain how you are a key element in making it effective.

Juilliard and Lincoln Center have a close relationship with the New York City Police Department.  Juilliard and Lincoln Center security teams are in direct radio contact. This contact would provide Juilliard with immediate expert assistance in any situation that extends beyond the limitations of our own or Lincoln Center’s in-house personnel. Within minutes, we would have an NYPD presence in our building if necessary.

Juilliard’s detailed emergency procedure manual stipulates guidelines for the Facilities Staff to follow in a spectrum of emergency situations.  One important aspect of these procedures is the need for you to call 911 first if someone is in immediate danger, and then contact the Security Desk at ext. 246 or 247. During business hours, please contact the Facilities Office (Room 247), at ext. 311 or 312 instead of the Security Desk.

A number of other serious emergency procedures are also made more effective with your involvement. However, as alluded to above, unless someone is in immediate danger, please call the Security Desk or Facilities Office first.  Some examples of serious security problems are as follows:

  1. 1)      Intruders
  2. 2)      Suspicious Behavior
  3. 3)      Suspicious Packages
  4. 4)      Weapons
  5. 5)      Heated Arguments
  6. 6)      Physical Altercations

Fire alarms or announcements need your immediate attention, but continued alarms or announcements are an indication of major problems.  Listen carefully for announcements following alarms.  Day to day security problems, like belongings left in practice rooms, or visitors appearing unannounced, should also be reported to the Facilities Office. We must work together as a community to ensure the safety of our environment.

During the next few months, we will explore avenues to increase our communication with you in the event of an emergency.  We are also considering enhancements to our crisis management plan.  I am available to hear any concerns or answer any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Joseph Mastrangelo

Vice President for Facilities Management
